Sitting Properly to Avoid Pressure Sores

If you have Multiple Sclerosis you probably have difficulties feeling your behind. Numbness and other neurological impairments can make it difficult and dangerous to sit for long periods of time. If you are not careful, you can easily get a pressure sore, even if you are not a wheelchair user.

Make sure that you are sitting on the best cushion possible based on your specific needs. The occupational therapist or doctor can prescribe this for you. If you are not sitting on the right cushion you can get pressure sores very easily. Pressure sores are bad and may require you to do bed rest in order for them to heal properly if they do heal.

If you have a disability that affects your ability to feel your behind, you are probably at an increased risk for pressure sores. Make sure to examine your behind at least twice a day. If you can not do this yourself, get your helper properly trained in what to look for and have them do it. Even if you can do it yourself, you should ask for guidance from your medical provider in what to look for in your special condition.

Several manufactures make wheelchair cushions. Over the years I have personally tried several of them and for me I like the Roho cushion the best. It is a cushion that is filled with air. The cushion has several projections that allow the air to move around with the smallest movements. Often, I forget or am too weak to do lifts which help with pressure sore prevention. So the Roho cushion moves and the pressure is adjusted when I adjust my wheelchair without me even thinking about it.

If you have ever had a pressure sore, you know what a pain it is. Make sure to use preventative techniques to avoid these unfortunate complications from being a wheelchair user. Make sure to always talk to your medical professional about any problems and special needs that you may have while sitting in your wheelchair.

Do you have any suggestions for the readers? If so please add to the comments and let us know. Maybe you have a brand of cushion that you like.

Alice - Free Shipping & $10 off $50 for new customers

If you have MS you know that their are days when you can barely move, let alone go out and do the grocery shopping or household shopping. I have found a great company to help out with these chores.

What a great service. If you have not tried Alice yet, you need to. They offer free shipping on every order, $10 off your first accumulation of $50, and on top of that they have great coupons that are taken off instantly. My first order with them was for about $25 after all my discounts and deals, and I got tons of stuff.

This is a great company to because they have those basic items that everyone needs. I order baby food from them that is far cheaper from them then the local companies. My little girl loves the Gerber pasta and cheese pick-ups and they sell them for $1.10 regular price. At the local Vons, they are $1.69. So I not only save lots of money but it is convenient as well. With the free shipping I can order what I need when I need it. They also remind me when I might be running low on an item.

When you click on their link you will get the $10 off $50 or more sign up bonus. I used this on my first order, but I believe they will combine your orders if you do not order $50 on the first time.

My strategy to with them is see what is on sale with their coupons, you can save tons by doing this. If you need other tips post and I will try to give some more money saving strategies for Alice.

Latest News On Vaccinations, Please Be Careful

If you have children and you have MS, you may want to have your kids avoid the Gardasil vaccination as it is reportley bringing on symptoms to people who are predisposed to MS. Remember I am not a doctor only a mom of two who has been dealing with MS for over twenty years. Here is the article and a direct link to the article with more information. Of course you will want to do some more research on this topic, but my girls will not get this vaccination.

"Sharon Labi, December 13, 2009 12:00am THE cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil has triggered multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms in some girls after being inoculated. Doctors said the victims were either teenagers or women in their early 20s who may have been predisposed to MS or who had a prior history of symptoms. St Vincent's Hospital neurologist Dr Ian Sutton reported five cases in a journal article in January. Another five have since emerged. "Gardasil vaccination is not the cause of MS; whether or not it was a trigger for episodes of inflammation in the brain in these rare cases is unclear," Dr Sutton said."

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

In lay terms Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease that basically attacks the brain and/or spinal cord. There appear to be as many variations on MS as their are people with MS. Two cases are not normally identical, instead they usually vary and can have different courses.

Some people with MS will have one 'attack' and never have any other problems, while some may die in a short period of time. Most people though are in the middle group, people that have fluctuating symptoms and that deteriorate slowly over time.

One common symptom of MS is having problems with heat, ie it is 101 degrees outside and suddenly an arm goes numb or some other symptom occurs from exposure to heat. In the olden days they used to put people who they thought had MS in hot baths and if this brought on their symptoms, then they probably had MS. If you have MS you will want to avoid hot tubs and hot bathing. This can bring on symptoms for most people who have MS.

Another common symptom is visual disturbances such as double vision. This goes along with Optic Neuritis. If you have Optic Neuritis you may have MS and vice versa their seems to be a high correlation for these two conditions.
